Can I rent a car in China?

Bookmark and Share

i am planning to come over to China to do some sight seeing and I was wondering if I can rent a car, cause I didn’t seem to find any car rental companies in china. if so, could I use my us driver’s license over there?
might sound crazy, but I am planning to go on a road trip and see the great wall, terracotta warriors and all of that.

There are car rental companies over here in China, but as a foreigner you can not drive unless you have a valid Chinese driver's license. We have wrote an article about this issue, you might want to check out Driving in China.
The Chinese gouvernment requires all foreigners to take a test to get a Chinese driver's licence. Although regulations are the same as in the US, some traffic signs are slightly different and they want to make sure you can read at least a little bit Chinese so you can recognize them.
However, in your case I would just recommend taking the intercity buses, or the new fast railway system. Although that is a bit controversial even over here, as people do not trust it's safety, the buses are really clean and on time over here. And of course you would get more sight seeing from the bus than any other method of transportation. You could also always hire a driver, but keep in mind that distances in China are huge. I would only hire a driver to drive me inside the city, and would take the bus for going from one city to another.
